Description

The Zoological Society of London, known as ZSL, is a science-led conservation charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.

It runs two conservation zoos, London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo, which bring people closer to nature and serve as centres of learning. Through these zoos it engages millions of visitors while advancing knowledge to protect wildlife. Its scientists and conservationists work around the world on field conservation projects.

ZSL carries out scientific research through its Institute of Zoology, a research division focused on species and habitat conservation. Research areas include the biology and recovery of small populations, co-existence between wildlife and people, global biodiversity monitoring, the impacts of climate change on biodiversity and wildlife health. It also publishes academic journals such as the Journal of Zoology and Animal Conservation, and makes resources available to academics and conservationists.

ZSL was founded in 1826, received a royal charter in 1829, and has maintained London Zoo since 1828 and Whipsnade Zoo since 1931. It is a registered charity under English law and is based in London.
