Plantlife

Description

Plantlife is a wild plant and fungi conservation charity, founded in 1989 and working across the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man. Since 2024 it has operated as Plantlife International, limited by guarantee. It manages nature reserves covering thousands of acres of rare and important plant habitats.

Its work spans four areas: protecting and restoring habitats, connecting people with nature, working in partnerships, and campaigning and influencing policy. It works across grasslands, mountains, woodlands, coasts, heathlands, farmland and peatlands, and it restores habitats such as hay meadows, limestone pavement and blanket bog. It also works on fungi conservation, including surveys of waxcap grasslands.

It runs public surveys such as the National Plant Monitoring Survey, and the Back from the Brink programme, which focuses conservation effort on some of Britain’s rarest plant species. It organised the Important Plant Areas programme, identifying internationally important wild plant sites, and it runs the annual No Mow May campaign to encourage garden biodiversity. It also has an international programme, including medicinal plant conservation work in the Himalayas and East Africa.
