Description

The Tanzania Environmental Conservation Society, known as TECOSO, is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization working on environmental protection and habitat conservation. It was founded in 1998 and registered in 1999. It takes an integrated approach that combines community development, environmental education, nature conservation and ecotourism.

Most of its activities take place in the Arusha, Manyara and Kilimanjaro regions and in Dar es Salaam. It has planted indigenous tree species and established nurseries around water sources, work that has helped restore water flow, control soil erosion and bring back wildlife and vegetation. It also runs land management programmes covering soil conservation, agroforestry, rainwater harvesting, crop productivity and livestock production, delivered through training and capacity building for farmers and extension staff.

TECOSO promotes gender mainstreaming in its conservation and development work, since women are often most affected by environmental degradation. It supports research, leadership development and vocational education, and partners with government bodies, universities, research centres and other NGOs locally and internationally. As a non-profit, it relies on donations from individuals and businesses to fund its projects.

The organization has taken part in workshops on sustainable finance and green bonds in Tanzania, organized with the European Union delegation and the Capital Markets and Securities Authority. It is a member of the Global Waste Cleaning Network and the Global Climate Pledge.
