Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group

Description

Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group is an international consortium of zoos and conservation groups working to protect Madagascar’s wildlife. It brings together zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and related institutions that pool resources for conservation in Madagascar. Member institutions pay dues to support an in-country program run with Madagascar’s Ministry of Water, Forests and the Environment.

The group runs conservation work at Parc Ivoloina and the Betampona Natural Reserve, including captive breeding, field research, and training for rangers and wardens. It leads the Save the Lemur campaign and manages projects such as ruffed lemur restocking, amphibian disease monitoring and endangered plant propagation. It also protects and acquires native habitat.

Beyond fieldwork, the group offers environmental education for schools, capacity-building programs, and publishes scientific research produced by its staff and partners. It was formed after a 1987 meeting convened by the Wildlife Conservation Society and the IUCN’s Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, and formalized in 1988. It is headquartered at the Saint Louis Zoo in the United States, with an office in Toamasina, Madagascar.
