Western Canada Wilderness Committee

Description

The Wilderness Committee is a Canadian non-profit that works to protect nature, defend wildlife and fight climate change.

Founded in 1980 in British Columbia, it began as a small group of activists focused on Canada’s coastal rainforests and grew into a national organization. It is independent and people-powered, and describes itself as protecting Canada’s biodiversity through strategic research and grassroots public education. It has a membership of more than 30,000 people.

The group runs community-based campaigns on protecting wild lands, safeguarding wildlife, defending public lands, preserving the Pacific coast and supporting healthy communities. It combines door-to-door canvassing, rallies, petition drives, educational publications, research and mapping, and litigation to press for changes in government policy. It works closely with other environmental groups, First Nations and community leaders, and has helped win protection for more than forty wilderness areas.

Its head office is in Vancouver, with field offices in Victoria, Winnipeg and Toronto, and it operates across Canada.
