National Audubon Society
Description
The National Audubon Society is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting birds and the places they need.
Incorporated in 1905, it grew out of earlier bird protection societies formed in the 1880s and 1890s in response to the plume trade and market hunting, and it is one of the oldest conservation organizations in the Western Hemisphere. It preserves bird habitats, conducts scientific research, works to influence policymakers on conservation laws, and engages communities across the Americas. It takes a hemispheric approach, since most bird species in the region migrate between Canada, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The organization has more than 800 staff, an extensive network of independent local and state chapters, and dozens of nature centers and sanctuaries that host conservation education and research. It runs science programs such as the Migratory Bird Explorer and coordinates citizen-science efforts including the Christmas Bird Count and, with Cornell University, eBird. It partners with organizations such as BirdLife International and works in eleven countries across the hemisphere.
It also publishes Audubon magazine and produces field guides and other educational materials for the public.
