Transparency International Greece

Description

Transparency International Greece is the Greek chapter of the global Transparency International movement. It was founded in 1996 to inform and raise public awareness about the dangers of corruption in Greece. It is one of more than 100 national chapters worldwide working to curb corruption and create a level playing field for citizens and businesses.

The organization defines corruption as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, and it studies how corruption erodes trust, weakens democracy and worsens inequality and poverty. It says transparency, though only a first step, helps the public hold the powerful to account. It has worked for more than twenty five years on the idea that governments, business and civil society must cooperate to control corruption.

It runs the Business Integrity Forum, a network of companies committing to transparent governance practices. Its WeOpenGov programme builds a national network of civil society, government, academic and business actors around open government. Its Integrity Watch platform publishes open data on the asset declarations of members of parliament as a political integrity observatory. It also uses an Integrity Pact tool to help governments and businesses fight corruption in public procurement with civil society oversight.

The organization publishes the Corruption Perceptions Index for Greece, comments on the rule of law, and takes part in international conferences on anti-corruption policy and whistleblower protection.
