Description

Gruppo Abele, operating as Fondazione Gruppo Abele, is an Italian organisation based in Turin. It works alongside people who are marginalised or in difficulty: young people troubled by restlessness, women exploited or victims of violence, disoriented families, people with addictions, men and women without a home, people suffering physical or mental illness, and foreigners seeking their rights.

Its mission is to accompany people in difficulty toward a future lived with dignity and autonomy, and to turn what it learns from these encounters into shared culture. It also translates its everyday commitment into political proposals aimed at improving life more broadly. This work is guided by principles that emphasise treating people rather than problems, freedom as shared responsibility, social and environmental justice together, and equality rather than charity.

In practice it runs a wide network of services and centres. These are organised around addictions, poverty and social exclusion, immigration and human trafficking, crime, violence and discrimination, children and families, youth and disadvantaged neighbourhoods, international cooperation, and culture and training.

Concrete services include a first-listening and reception service for addiction and educational problems, a day centre and drop-in service for substance dependency, and a crisis centre for young people using crack or new drugs. Other services are a shelter for homeless women, a day centre for foreign women, a helpline for victims of crime and gender violence, legal advice for foreign nationals, and an anti-trafficking project. There is also support for gender identity distress, street-based youth outreach, family education activities, youth co-housing, and support for young people with hikikomori-type withdrawal, plus a library and historical archive, a training agency on social issues, and an international cooperation project in Ivory Coast.

The organisation also sells books and solidarity products, and publishes social and financial reports.
