The Peregrine Fund
Description
The Peregrine Fund is a non-profit organization that conserves threatened and endangered birds of prey worldwide.
It was founded in 1970 to restore the peregrine falcon from the brink of extinction through captive breeding and release. After the falcon recovered, the organization expanded to other raptors, including the California condor, the Aplomado falcon and species in Central America, South America, Madagascar, Asia, East Africa, Australia and the Philippines. It works with local conservation groups and governments, trains and mentors students in conservation science, conducts research, and runs environmental education programs.
The organization is headquartered at its World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, which includes breeding and research facilities, an interpretive center, a research library and archives. Staff work in many countries, including a team of biologists in Madagascar. It is governed by a multi-national board of directors drawn from business, science and conservation.
Work has included breeding and releasing raptors such as the harpy eagle, the Ridgway’s hawk and the orange-breasted falcon, surveying vulture populations in Africa and Asia, and researching the causes of vulture die-offs on the Indian subcontinent. The organization has worked with more than 100 raptor species across dozens of countries since its founding.
