Description

NABU, Naturschutzbund Deutschland, is a German nature conservation association and the country’s oldest and largest environmental group.

It was founded in 1899 in Stuttgart as an association for bird protection and took its current name after a 1990 merger with an East German conservation group. It has around 980,000 members and supporters organised in local groups across Germany, and is the German partner of BirdLife International. It is formally recognised by the German state as a body that must be consulted on issues affecting ecology.

NABU works as an advocate for threatened species, protects and shapes habitats, and pushes for an energy transition compatible with nature. It carries out conservation projects, secures and manages nature conservation areas, runs a research institute, and provides environmental education. It also informs the media and the public about nature and conservation topics, and speaks for nature’s interests in political debate.
