Description

Sustrans, renamed Walk Wheel Cycle Trust in 2025, is a British charity that works to make walking, wheeling and cycling possible for everyone.

It is the custodian of the National Cycle Network, a network of signed paths and routes that connect people and places across the United Kingdom and give everyone traffic-free spaces to use. It works with communities to change how people travel and gathers evidence to influence policy on active travel. It runs projects across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and offers services to partners tackling congestion, air pollution, physical inactivity and social inequality through walking and cycling.

The charity began in Bristol in 1977 as Cyclebag, a group of cyclists and environmentalists responding to the lack of provision for cyclists in British cities. It converted a disused railway line into the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, its first route. The charity itself was founded in 1983, and it later received Millennium Lottery funding to extend the National Cycle Network to towns and rural areas and to launch a Safe Routes to Schools project. It relies on donations, volunteers and supporters, with 550 colleagues and 2,500 volunteers working alongside it.
