Environmental Organizations United States

Description

NRDC, the Natural Resources Defense Council, is an environmental advocacy group that combines legal action, science and policy work to protect the planet.

It brings together millions of members and online activists with scientists, lawyers and other specialists to confront the climate crisis, protect wildlife and wild places, and secure clean air, clean water and healthy communities. It works through litigation, advocacy at every level of government, scientific research, and partnerships with frontline and international communities. Its attorneys represent the organization and other nonprofits, community groups and individuals in court, and it lobbies lawmakers from city halls to Congress to international negotiating tables.

The organization was founded in 1970 in New York, growing out of a legal fight against a hydroelectric plant on the Hudson River, and was the first national environmental group to focus on legal action. Over the decades it has worked on the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting chemicals, the Oil Pollution Act, and cases involving the Flint water crisis and the Keystone XL pipeline.

NRDC is headquartered in New York City, with offices elsewhere in the United States and programs in Canada, China, India and Latin America. It works on climate change, communities, energy, food, health, oceans, water and wild places, and its Action Fund affiliate engages in political and electoral work.
