Stand.earth

Description

Stand.earth is a grassroots environmental organization, formerly known as ForestEthics, that protects forests and pushes for climate action.

It uses public education, advocacy, protest, negotiation and non-violent direct action to transform corporate policy and government laws in the United States and Canada. Its team of strategists, researchers, communicators and policy experts works alongside a network of donors and activists demanding transformational change. It challenges the fossil fuel industry, protects healthy forests and works to reduce global climate emissions.

Its campaigns have targeted pipelines and oil trains, pushed companies such as Starbucks on packaging, and pressed the international clothing and shipping industries to cut emissions. Earlier, as ForestEthics, it ran junk mail reduction campaigns and worked to protect North America’s boreal forest and oppose Alberta tar sands development. It also challenged the Sustainable Forestry Initiative as a greenwashing scheme and, through its Honor the Sacred Headwaters campaign with the Tahltan Nation, helped stop a fracking project in British Columbia’s Klappan Valley.

The organization traces its roots to Friends of Clayoquot Sound, formed in 1979, and was officially founded as ForestEthics in 2000, later renamed Stand.earth in 2016. It has offices in Vancouver, Canada, and in Bellingham and San Francisco in the United States.
