Environmental Organizations United States

Description

EARTHDAY.ORG is a nonprofit that works to broaden, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

It grew out of the first Earth Day in 1970, when 20 million Americans mobilized for greater protection of the planet. The organization describes itself as the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 150,000 partners in over 192 countries. It runs environmental campaigns on issues from voter registration to environmental education.

EARTHDAY.ORG works to widen what counts as an environmental issue, covering matters such as school conditions, green jobs and pollution that affect health and communities. It offers civic engagement opportunities at local, state, national and global levels, and often partners with low-income communities, recognizing that climate change hits vulnerable groups first and hardest. Its work is coordinated through an international network spanning Africa, Asia, the Middle East and other regions.

The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
