Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center is a nonprofit environmental law and advocacy organization working across the southeastern United States.

It employs lawyers, policy experts and community advocates to defend air, water, climate, wildlife and land. The center takes on utilities, polluters and government agencies through litigation, regulatory advocacy and community partnership. It has won cases forcing cleanup of coal ash pits, blocking new coal plants, and stopping pipeline projects such as the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. It also supports solar energy growth and works to prevent damaging road and logging projects.

The center works with hundreds of local, state, national and international partner organizations, including communities directly affected by pollution and environmental injustice. It produces a podcast, Broken Ground, and a magazine sharing stories from the communities it works with.

Founded in 1986, the center is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, with nine offices across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
