Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Description

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a conservation organisation that protects wildlife and habitats in Kenya.

It was founded in 1977 by Daphne Sheldrick and is best known for its Orphans’ Project, which rescues and rehabilitates orphaned elephants, rhinos and other species before returning them to the wild. It runs a nursery in Nairobi National Park and a field headquarters at Kaluku, bordering Tsavo East National Park. The trust operates anti-poaching units, a canine detection unit and an aerial unit in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service.

It also runs mobile veterinary units across several Kenyan ecosystems, builds boreholes and fences to ease human-wildlife conflict, and works with the Kenya Forest Service to conserve the Kibwezi Forest. A community outreach programme aims to improve livelihoods and education for people living near Kenya’s national parks. The trust is based in Nairobi, with affiliated charities registered in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
