Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Scenic Hudson is an environmental organization working to protect and enhance the Hudson Valley in New York State.

It was founded in 1963 to stop a hydroelectric plant on Storm King Mountain, a campaign credited with launching the modern grassroots environmental movement and establishing citizen standing to challenge development on environmental grounds. It is now the largest environmental group in the region, with more than 25,000 supporters. It protects open spaces, working farms and historic town centers along the Hudson River between New York City and Albany.

Its work has three main strands: protecting land, creating and enhancing parks and preserves, and advocating for responsible development and environmental policy. Land and conservation easements are usually held by its affiliate, the Scenic Hudson Land Trust. Together they have protected more than 31,000 acres across nine counties and created or enhanced more than sixty parks, preserves and historic sites.

It also works on public policy, helping establish programs such as the Hudson River Estuary Program and the Hudson River Valley Greenway, and partners with municipalities and other environmental organizations on urban waterfront revitalization and climate adaptation.
