Description

The Environmental Law Institute is a nonprofit research, publishing and education center working to strengthen environmental law and governance.

Its audience includes government officials, business leaders, land managers, planners, environmentalists, journalists, law students and lawmakers. It drafts law and policy for governments, trains judges and other professionals, and publishes research on environmental and natural resource issues. It also convenes conferences and seminars that bring together people with differing views to work through environmental problems.

Since 1969 it has worked on environmental law and management both in the United States and abroad, including drafting ocean management rules and helping rebuild legal frameworks in other countries. It runs the Climate Judiciary Project, which trains state and federal judges on climate science and law. The institute is based in Washington, D.C., and is governed by a board of directors drawn from the environmental profession and related fields.

Support for the institute comes from individuals, foundations, government, corporations and law firms.
