Rewilding Europe

Description

Rewilding Europe is a non-profit foundation working to make Europe a wilder place through the rewilding of diverse landscapes.

It is a pan-European organisation with a central team and landscape teams that work together on rewilding areas across the continent, from Portugal’s Côa Valley to the Danube Delta, the Southern Carpathians, the Velebit mountains, the Central Apennines, the Rhodope Mountains, the Oder Delta, Swedish Lapland and the Iberian Highlands. Its work includes reintroducing large grazers, predators and other native species, restoring natural processes such as flooding and grazing, and supporting nature-based economies and ecotourism alongside local communities. It also works with Indigenous and local groups, such as Sami reindeer herders in Lapland, on traditional land use.

The organisation runs several supporting tools: the European Rewilding Network, which connects rewilding sites and shares knowledge; Rewilding Europe Capital, which lends to businesses that support rewilding; and the European Wildlife Bank, which manages the supply of herbivores such as bison, native horses and Tauros cattle for reintroduction projects. It also carries out policy work to promote rewilding within European Union nature and biodiversity policy and publishes annual reviews of its activities.

Rewilding Europe is based in the Netherlands and was established in 2011 as an independent, non-profit foundation.
