Repubblika

Description

Repubblika is an independent, non-partisan civil society organisation in Malta. It works to strengthen democracy, the rule of law and good governance. It was founded in 2019 by citizens at a time when confidence in Malta’s democratic institutions had been seriously challenged. It was established on the conviction that safeguarding democracy is a responsibility shared by citizens, not only governments and public authorities.

The organisation works through research, public advocacy, legal action where appropriate including strategic litigation, civic education, policy development and collaboration with other civil society organisations in Malta and across Europe. Its stated areas of work include democracy and constitutional reform, the rule of law, good governance and anti-corruption, human rights, civic participation, research and public policy, and European cooperation. It says its positions are guided by evidence, constitutional principles and the public interest. It says it engages with public institutions while remaining independent of government, political parties and commercial interests.

Its stated values are independence, integrity, democracy, rule of law, human rights and civic responsibility. Repubblika contributes to national debate on constitutional reform, institutional accountability, anti-corruption measures, human rights, environmental governance and democratic resilience. It also participates in European partnerships with other organisations.

It is governed by a members-elected Executive Committee responsible for strategy and accountability, with an Executive Officer leading a staff team on day-to-day operations. The organisation is registered in Malta under the Voluntary Organisations Act. Its work is funded through a combination of membership subscriptions, donations, grants and project funding, and it says accepting funding does not affect its independence, governance or policy positions. It offers ways for the public to get involved through membership, volunteering and donations.
