Reporters United

Description

Reporters United is a network of reporters that supports investigative journalism in Greece. It collaborates on cross-border projects with journalists and outlets abroad, and, when necessary, publishes stories on its own platform that struggle to find a place in the Greek press. It is a non-profit organisation, registered as a Civil Non-Profit Company (AMKE) since 2019, with offices at the Romantso incubator in central Athens.

Its aims include promoting independent investigative journalism through tools such as a safe whistleblowing platform and systematic freedom-of-information requests. It offers services like digital security workshops and legal support to journalists, and connects Greek reporters with international networks such as Investigate Europe and the European Investigations Collaboration. It organizes seminars, public events and meetings for journalists at its Athens office, and produces investigative animations and documentaries in partnership with international broadcasters and outlets.

Reporters United funds itself through fundraising, donations, voluntary subscriptions and revenue from collaborations with foreign media. It refuses funding from the Greek state, political parties, the private sector, large foreign states, and foundations with a dominant role in Greek public life, to preserve its independence. It runs Greekleaks, the first platform for whistleblowers in Greece, letting citizens securely share documents, video, audio or information with its journalists.

Past work has included supporting whistleblower Maria Efimova, whose case was linked to the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. It has filed freedom-of-information requests to the Greek police. It co-signed an international call for whistleblower protection during the Covid-19 pandemic. It produced cross-border investigations with partners including Investigate Europe, the Outlaw Ocean Project, and outlets such as Mediapart, Buzzfeed, VICE and The Nation.
