Bivol

Description

Bivol is an independent Bulgarian website for investigative journalism, founded in November 2010 by journalist Asen Yordanov.

It publishes reporting and analysis on corruption, organized crime and abuse of power in Bulgaria, alongside opinion pieces from outside commentators. Since 2011 it has been the Bulgarian and Balkan partner of Wikileaks, processing and publishing diplomatic cables and other leaked material. It joined the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project network in 2013 and became a partner of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2018.

The site invites readers to comment, propose new investigations and send additional information on published stories. It does not accept funding from foundations; it is financed instead by reader donations and the sale of advertising space.

Bivol’s journalists have faced physical attacks, threats, surveillance and criminal investigations over the years in connection with their reporting on corruption and organized crime. Its director, Asen Yordanov, received the Leipzig Media Award in 2010 and was named among Reporters Without Borders’ information heroes in 2014.
