Power Shift Network
Description
Power Shift Network was a North American network of youth-led environmental and social justice organizations working on climate change.
It described itself as an intergenerational network that centered young people most affected by the climate crisis, mobilizing them to fight climate and environmental injustice, oppose dirty energy projects, push fossil fuel divestment and campaign for a just, clean-energy future. Rather than running programs alone, it gave member organizations autonomy through training, coaching, networking and small grants, while also coordinating joint action across the network. It worked through an intersectional approach linking climate, racial and economic justice.
The network began in 2004 as the Energy Action Coalition, founded by representatives of nearly twenty environmental groups, and took its current name in 2016 to reflect a shift from a coalition to a network structure. It operated in the United States and Canada, ran youth climate conferences known as Power Shift, and organized annual days of action, campus climate campaigns and regional summits. Its members included dozens of other environmental and social justice organizations and student groups. It was based in Washington, D.C.
