Periodistas de a Pie

Description

Periodistas de a Pie is a Mexican organization made up mostly of working women journalists, founded in 2007 to raise the quality of journalism in Mexico.

It trains journalists and helps them exchange investigative techniques, reporting strategies and narrative styles, covering news with a human rights focus. It became a civil organization in 2010 as attacks on the press in Mexico grew systematic, and since then it has worked with journalists nationwide on safety and self care. It links up with local collectives to defend freedom of expression and the right to information.

The organization runs a network of more than 80 collaborators across Mexican states and partners with national and international media to co-publish investigations. It also helps strengthen independent local journalism platforms. Since 2016 it has belonged to the Global Investigative Journalism Network, and in 2018 it helped set up an alliance of local media outlets for freedom of expression.

Its work is organized around training, a network of journalists, documenting attacks on the press, and collective investigations into serious human rights violations, including migration. It has produced a newspaper for Central American migrants crossing Mexico and a website on migration. The organization has received awards including the LASA Media Award, the IPI Free Media Pioneer Award and Mexico’s National Journalism Prize.
