The International Press Institute (IPI) is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists. They share a common dedication to quality, independent journalism. Its mission is to defend media freedom and the free flow of news wherever they are threatened. It also works to promote conditions that let journalism operate free from interference and without fear of retaliation.

IPI is supported by a professional secretariat based in Vienna. It works by conducting direct advocacy with governments, raising awareness of violations of media freedom through news coverage, research and analysis. It leads programmes and campaigns to further change, and offers platforms for cooperation, networking and skills exchange among its members.

It promotes high-quality, independent journalism through the development of best practices at the global level. It provides opportunities for dialogue among diverse journalistic communities, in line with its founding principles. IPI is an association of media professionals representing leading digital, print and broadcast news outlets in nearly 100 countries.

Its members work cooperatively to shape debate on policies affecting the media. They also push back against efforts to restrict the free flow of news and information for political, economic or other interests. Membership also offers solidarity to journalists facing oppression. The organization says its network’s strength has, over its decades-long history, shielded journalists from attack or forced violators of media freedom to back down amid global exposure of their actions.
