Neighbors for Environmental Justice
Description
Neighbors for Environmental Justice is a grassroots community group working on environmental justice in Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood.
It formed after the asphalt plant MAT Asphalt opened suddenly in the neighborhood, and it continues to work toward shutting the plant down. Its mission is to foster awareness, organize residents and promote community action to reduce pollution and build a healthier, more sustainable community. It is a registered nonprofit made up mostly of people who live in or near McKinley Park.
The group connects local pollution problems to broader issues such as environmental racism and government corruption, working from the belief that residents themselves can drive change once they understand the root causes of their situation. It collects environmental and air-quality data for the neighborhood and publishes yearly reports on its work, including a report on Chicago’s environmental enforcement practices.
It partners with other Chicago environmental justice groups, including the Chicago Environmental Justice Network, the Southwest Environmental Alliance, People for Community Recovery and the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization, on shared advocacy, organizing and education efforts.
