Earthjustice

Description

Earthjustice is a nonprofit public interest law organization dedicated to environmental protection.

It was founded in 1971 as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and took its current name in 1997, though it has always operated independently of the Sierra Club. It is headquartered in San Francisco and works through 16 offices across the United States, plus a policy team in Washington, D.C. and an international program.

It uses litigation to protect public health, preserve wild places and wildlife, advance clean energy and combat climate change. It provides free legal representation to more than a thousand public-interest clients, from national environmental groups to small community organizations, and employs more than 200 full-time lawyers along with research analysts, policy experts and scientists.

Its regional offices focus on local issues such as oil and gas drilling in the Arctic, coal ash pollution in the Midwest, toxic exposure in Florida and clean energy policy nationwide. It is funded entirely by donations from individuals and foundations rather than government or corporate money.
