Nature Canada

Description

Nature Canada is a member-based environmental organization headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, working to protect nature across Canada.

Its roots go back to 1939, when it began as a magazine called Canadian Nature. It became the Audubon Society of Canada in 1948, was renamed the Canadian Nature Federation in 1971, and took its current name in 2004. It says it now has more than 250,000 members and supporters and over 1,000 partner organizations in its Nature Network.

Its mission is to protect and conserve wildlife and habitats by engaging people and advocating on their behalf. It works through community-based conservation, lobbying for federal legislation to protect endangered species and habitats, and partnering internationally on bird conservation through BirdLife International’s Important Bird Area program. Current priorities include expanding protected areas, an urban nature program called NatureHood, a Bird Friendly Cities certification scheme, and research into the legal rights of nature.
