Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The National Wildlife Federation is America’s largest and oldest private, nonprofit conservation education and advocacy organization.

It was founded in 1936, growing out of a North American Wildlife Conference convened at the urging of cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling, and it has worked ever since to unite Americans around wildlife conservation. It has millions of members and supporters and around 51 state and territorial affiliated organizations, which are autonomous grassroots groups that help set its conservation policy. It works across seven regions of the United States on land stewardship, air and water quality, and wildlife conservation.

Its programs include education, training, research and lobbying on issues such as habitat restoration, climate change and species protection. It runs the Certified Wildlife Habitat program, which helps people make their yards and communities more wildlife-friendly, and Eco-Schools USA, which brings sustainability practices into schools. It also publishes wildlife magazines, including Ranger Rick for children and National Wildlife for adults, and produces educational films and broadcasts.

Its headquarters is in Reston, Virginia.
