Description

Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, known as BELA, is a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to environmental justice in Bangladesh.

It was established in 1992 by lawyer Dr. Mohiuddin Farooque, and it monitors compliance with environmental law, raises environmental awareness and works to develop environmental jurisprudence. It began as a group of young lawyers and has grown into a nationwide legal advocate for communities harmed by environmental hazards. It offers legal support to people defending their environmental rights and pursues public interest litigation on their behalf.

BELA has brought landmark cases, including suits against the shipbreaking industry over unsafe conditions and pollution, and against unlawful construction, deforestation, and destruction of wetlands. It also serves as a Right to Information focal point, runs training and research programs, and publishes reports, books and newsletters on environmental law. Before filing cases it often issues legal notices to responsible agencies and offenders, aiming to resolve issues without full litigation.

The organization is led by an Executive Committee of lawyers and a Chief Executive, with a countrywide structure of divisional and district offices. It operates across Bangladesh, with its head office in Dhaka and branch offices in several divisions. Its work has received national and international recognition, including the UNEP Global 500 Roll of Honour and the Tang Prize in Rule of Law.
