Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The Natural Resources Council of Maine is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to protecting, restoring and conserving Maine’s environment.

It was founded in 1959, when a group of concerned citizens came together to protect the Allagash River. It grew from a small volunteer group into Maine’s largest environmental advocacy organization, drawing on the support of tens of thousands of members and activists.

NRCM works through legal action, science and public advocacy on climate and clean energy, healthy waters, forests and wildlife, and sustainable communities. It tracks the Maine State Legislature and executive agency rulemaking, submits comments to lawmakers and regulators, and partners with other nonprofits and citizens on shared environmental concerns.

The organization has taken part in many of Maine’s major environmental campaigns, including the protection of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, the Bottle Bill, removal of the Edwards Dam, an electronic waste recycling law, the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and bans on polystyrene and single-use plastic bags. It operates statewide from its office in Augusta, Maine.
