Native Woodland Trust

Description

Native Woodland Trust is an Irish environmental organisation working to protect, restore and expand Ireland’s native woodlands. It was founded in December 1998 and granted charitable status in 2002. It is registered as the Irish Woodland Trust but trades under the name Native Woodland Trust.

The Trust aims to protect and expand Ireland’s ancient and semi-natural woodlands, create new native woodland where it would naturally occur, and restore native flora, fauna and bird life. New woodlands are planted using seed sourced from native trees near the planting site, and management favours natural regeneration and minimal human intervention. It owns and manages woodland reserves across Ireland, including Ardan Wood in County Westmeath, Camcor in County Offaly and sites in counties Leitrim, Wicklow, Waterford, Roscommon, Galway and Donegal.

It is run by a voluntary board of trustees with a small core staff and volunteers in local areas, and is a membership organisation with a subscription magazine. The Trust is a member of the Irish Environmental Network and the Irish Environmental Pillar, and works with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council on shared sites such as Girley Wood and Girley Bog in County Meath.
