Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)

Description

Green Africa Youth Organization, or GAYO, is a youth-led group working on environmental sustainability, founded in Ghana in 2014.

It works directly with local communities to reduce the vulnerability of children, youth and women to climate impacts, focusing on climate change, the circular economy, disaster risk reduction, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy. Its mission is to provide solutions to environmental problems through youth empowerment, skills development and public education. Projects include community-based waste management, zero-waste strategies for municipalities, tree planting, composting, and campus eco clubs that train young people on environmental issues in universities. It also set up Africa’s first Youth Climate Council to build climate skills among young people.

GAYO started in Ghana and now has a physical presence in Botswana and Uganda, while also delivering projects in Egypt, Mali, Kenya and South Africa. It was founded by Joshua Amponsem and Desmond Alugnoa.
