Centre for Science and Environment

Description

Centre for Science and Environment, known as CSE, is a not-for-profit public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi, India.

Founded in 1980, it works as a think tank on environment-development issues, studying poor planning, climate impacts and pollution. It pushes for policy changes and better enforcement of existing environmental rules. Its projects range from waste management studies in cities such as Agra to food adulteration and consumer product safety testing.

Its director, Sunita Narain, has led investigations exposing high levels of pesticides in popular soft drink brands, drawing national attention to food safety standards. In 2018 CSE received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development.

CSE also engages in climate change advocacy, issuing statements and analysis during international negotiations such as the Paris climate talks. It combines research, reporting and public advocacy to press governments toward stronger environmental policy and better implementation of existing rules.
