Description

Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli, known as LIPU, is one of the most important environmental associations in Italy and Europe. It was founded in 1965 to protect the country’s wildlife, with a particular focus on birds. It is the Italian partner of BirdLife International, the largest international federation for bird protection, which has 123 member organizations worldwide.

LIPU works on bird species protection, including action against illegal shooting and trapping, and on the conservation and development of important habitats. It runs national and international projects on biodiversity conservation and environmental policy, and it carries out environmental education and public awareness activities. It manages 29 oases and nature reserves and 9 wildlife recovery centers across Italy, and it lobbies for stronger Italian and EU laws on wildlife protection.

It is recognised by the Italian President as a moral entity and by the Ministry of the Environment as an environmental association, and it is registered as a volunteer organization able to carry out scientific research. It is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It has over 34,000 supporters, about 100 local delegations and groups, and 1,400 active volunteers, and it is based in Parma, Italy.
