Description

Lavialibera is an Italian bimonthly print and digital investigative magazine. It reports on organized crime, corruption, the environment and migration. It was founded in 2019, with its first issue published in January 2020, by the non-profit social enterprise La Via Libera srl, set up jointly by the anti-mafia association Libera and the Fondazione Gruppo Abele.

Lavialibera carries no advertising and accepts no outside interference. It draws on the thirty-year legacy of the monthly Narcomafie, founded in 1993 after the Capaci and Via D’Amelio mafia massacres. Its stated goals are to inform, denounce, document and inspire. It gives voice to vulnerable and marginalised groups, including relatives of mafia victims, migrants without legal status, prisoners, people with disabilities, and workers and communities hit by environmental and industrial harm.

Its methods include community-based journalism, such as sending its editorial staff to live and report from a single Italian region for a week at a time, freedom-of-information requests and civic monitoring. It conducts transnational investigations with partners such as Le Monde, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, El País, IrpiMedia and Recommon, and solutions journalism through the Sojo Europe programme.

Lavialibera is a member of the Free Press for Climate coalition promoted by Greenpeace and of the Foia4Italy coalition. It is pursuing certification from the Journalism Trust Initiative. It also runs a secure, anonymous reporting channel for sources. It is based in Turin, funded partly by Italian public subsidies for publishing, and led by an editorial director, a managing editor and a newsroom supported by a scientific committee and outside collaborators.
