Description
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a nonprofit organization that protects and defends press freedom. It builds secure communications tools, including SecureDrop. SecureDrop is used by many of the world’s top investigative news organizations to receive information from sources safely. More than 100 installations of SecureDrop are in use by major news organizations across the globe.
FPF teaches journalists how to keep themselves and their sources safe in the digital age. It runs digital security trainings. More than 8,800 journalists have attended these trainings in the last five years.
FPF monitors and documents virtually every press freedom violation in the United States through the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. The Tracker has published more than 2,000 reports of incidents. FPF also engages in advocacy to defend the public’s right to know, generating more than 880 citations or quotes in the media in the last year.
FPF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2012. It is based in Brooklyn, New York.
