Description

Island Conservation is a nonprofit working to restore islands for nature and people worldwide.

Its focus is islands that hold species listed as Critically Endangered or Endangered, where it works with local communities, government agencies and other conservation groups to remove invasive species such as rats and feral cats that threaten native wildlife. It also carries out field research to document the results of its projects and guide future work. Since its founding in 1994, it has built partnerships with more than 100 organizations and deployed teams to protect over a thousand populations of species across dozens of islands.

Restoring islands, the organization argues, brings benefits beyond conservation, including healthier coral reefs and marine life, greater food security for island communities, and climate resilience. It has pioneered methods such as helicopter-based eradication and drone-powered rat removal, and it co-founded the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge with Re:wild and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to restore island-ocean ecosystems worldwide by 2030.

It operates in North America, the Pacific, the Caribbean and South America, including projects in the United States, Canada, the Galapagos, Chile, and islands across the Pacific.
