IFEX

Description

IFEX is a global network of independent organizations that defend and promote freedom of expression as a human right.

It was first proposed in 1992 in Montreal, Canada, and its secretariat is based in Toronto, Canada. The network now brings together over 100 member organizations across more than 60 countries. Members work at local, national, regional and international level on press freedom, internet censorship, freedom of information and related rights.

IFEX connects its members across borders, shares knowledge, opens doors to advocacy spaces and channels resources to where they are needed. It coordinates joint statements, petitions and advocacy campaigns on issues such as attacks on journalists, media concentration, and threats to online activists and other free expression defenders. It also runs the International Day to End Impunity campaign for crimes against journalists, adopted by the United Nations in 2013.

The network publishes articles, reports and an annual review of its work, drawing on the expertise and reach of its member organizations around the world. It also develops tools and frameworks meant to help civil society groups strengthen collaboration among themselves.
