Press Freedom Organizations Netherlands

Description

Stichting Democratie en Media (SDM) is a Dutch organization based in Amsterdam. It works on the health of the media landscape and public debate in the Netherlands. It publishes opinion pieces and commentary. One piece urges a fundamental debate about how the Dutch use media. It warns about declining interest in news, growing use of social media and AI chatbots, and rising concern over disinformation and fake news.

Together with De Argumentenfabriek and the news site NU.nl, SDM launched Het Grote Mediadebat. This initiative organizes in-person media meetups across the country as well as online discussions. It brings citizens together to talk about their worries and how they can regain a grip on the news they consume.

SDM also supports journalism training. It invites journalists to sign up for an Academie voor de Rechtsstaat. It also publishes an annual report on its activities.
