Description

Correctiv is a non-profit, public-interest media organisation based in Germany that works to strengthen democracy through journalism, media education and open technology. It is described as Germany’s largest public-interest media house and is known for multiple award-winning investigative journalism. It triggers public debates, works with citizens on its investigations, and supports society through educational programmes.

Its vision is a society in which everyone can put information into context, question sources and recognise disinformation. People’s own media behaviour is seen as key to shaping public life together. Its newsrooms cover investigative research, fact-checking, local journalism, climate reporting and a youth editorial team called Salon5. They uncover abuses of power, expose disinformation, strengthen local journalism and report on the climate crisis.

It combines journalism with theatre, art and new storytelling formats. Reporting is independent and non-partisan, and all content is freely accessible. Correctiv also delivers media literacy training in schools, clubs and online through offerings such as Reporterfabrik, the Salon5 youth newsroom and CORRECTIV.Faktenforum. It develops participatory digital tools and technology projects such as CrowdNewsroom, beabee and CORRECTIV.Starthub to support innovation and collaboration in journalism.

Correctiv was founded in 2014 and has since received more than 50 awards for its journalistic work, including the Grimme Online Award and the Nannen Preis. It does not work for profit and does not run advertising or paywalls. It is financed through a three-pillar model of private donations, institutional support from foundations, institutions and companies, and its own revenue such as book sales. It publishes annual reports on its work and finances.

It has more than 120 staff, is based in Essen with an editorial office in Berlin, and works with local and international partners. It is overseen by a board of trustees, a supervisory board and an ethics council. It has committed to the standards of the Seal of Non-Profit Journalism and the Initiative for Transparent Civil Society.
