Environmental Organizations Hong Kong

Description

Green Power is a locally rooted environmental group in Hong Kong, founded in 1988 by concerned citizens as volunteers.

Its core mission has always been environmental education, on the belief that education is the most fundamental way to change attitudes and behaviour. It works in three main directions: ecological conservation, promotion in schools and communities, and policy advocacy. It received the second China Environment Award from the China Environmental Protection Foundation in recognition of its education work.

In conservation, it restores local wetland habitats, including the Sha Lo Tung management agreement since 2018 and habitat management at the Long Valley Nature Park since 2022, and it runs long-term ecological surveys that feed data into its conservation and advocacy work, drawing on citizen scientists. It set up a Green School Network to help schools deliver environmental education, training teachers and publishing cross-subject teaching materials, and it runs programmes to connect students with nature. It also organises large annual community projects such as coastal and trail clean-ups, invasive species removal and low-carbon challenges, and it takes part in environmental policy consultations, pushing government for more environmentally friendly regulation.

Green Power is a recognised charity funded entirely by public donations, fundraising events and corporate sponsorship. It is based in Hong Kong.
