Great Swamp Watershed Association
Description
The Great Swamp Watershed Association is a member-based conservation organization working to protect water and natural areas around the Passaic River in New Jersey.
It works through science, education, land preservation and stewardship, and advocacy. Its programs serve people who live, work or play in the Great Swamp watershed in Morris County. It is the Waterkeeper Alliance affiliate for the Passaic River, part of a global network defending the right to clean water.
The association protects natural areas such as the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Loantaka Brook Reservation and Jockey Hollow. It monitors water quality in local streams and manages a conservation management area open for hiking. It also runs school programming, a speakers bureau, native plant sales and other education and outreach efforts, and encourages residents to take action on land and water issues.
The association was formed in 1981 as a small grassroots group and has grown to serve members across more than 40 municipalities in New Jersey.
