Description

Rainforest Action Network is an environmental organization that preserves forests, protects the climate and upholds human rights by challenging corporate power.

It works through grassroots organizing, media campaigns, non-violent direct action and negotiations with corporations, pushing industry-leading companies to adopt stronger environmental policies on issues from deforestation to climate change. Its Tropical Forests Program works to stop deforestation and the destruction of peatland in Indonesia and Malaysia, including campaigns against palm oil agribusiness. Its Energy and Finance program targets banks that finance destructive forestry, fossil fuels and coal mining, pressing them to adopt policies against funding projects such as mountaintop removal mining. It also runs a Protect-an-Acre program that funds traditional forest communities and Indigenous peoples directly, rather than buying land itself, on the view that these communities are the most effective protectors of their forests.

Rainforest Action Network works in close alliance with other non-governmental organizations and frontline and Indigenous partners, and has run campaigns affecting the home building, wood, automobile, fashion, paper and banking industries. It was founded in San Francisco, California, in 1985, where it remains headquartered.
