Friends of the Earth Malta
Description
Friends of the Earth Malta is an environmental and social justice campaign group in Malta. It was founded in 1985 as an umbrella group bringing together youth and environmental organisations, and was formerly known as Zghazagh ghall-Ambjent. It gained early attention after members were attacked during a 1985 protest against development on Malta’s beaches and countryside.
The group campaigns on climate change, land use, GMOs, water, waste, safer chemicals and social and environmental justice. It engages the public directly through campaigns and activities, raises awareness of national and international issues, and mobilises people to take part in decision-making processes. It also promotes practical alternatives to harmful environmental behaviours through education and advocacy.
Friends of the Earth Malta lobbies and influences policymakers towards a more just and sustainable society. Since 1991 it has been part of Friends of the Earth International, a network active in many countries, and it is one of the national groups represented by Friends of the Earth Europe. It is based in Malta.
