Foundation for Environmental Education

Description

The Foundation for Environmental Education, known as FEE, is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation promoting sustainable development through environmental education.

It was established in 1981 as the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe and dropped Europe from its name in 2001 as it grew into a global network. It is an umbrella organisation with one national member organisation per country, and it now has members in 77 countries worldwide. A national organisation joins as an associate member and is expected to become a full member within three to five years by fully implementing at least two FEE programmes.

FEE runs five programmes: Blue Flag, for beaches and marinas, Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment, Learning about Forests, and Green Key International, covering the tourism and hospitality sector. Young Reporters for the Environment engages young people in more than 25 countries in investigative journalism on local environmental issues. FEE has also signed cooperation agreements with the United Nations Environment Programme and the UN World Tourism Organization, and it runs the Global Forest Fund to offset travel emissions through tree planting and environmental education.

FEE is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.
