Global Footprint Network

Description

Global Footprint Network is an international nonprofit that develops tools for measuring sustainability, founded in 2003.

It created the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity metrics, which track how much natural resource people, cities and countries use against what nature can regenerate. Each year it publishes National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts covering more than 200 countries and territories, built from thousands of data points per country. It also runs the Ecological Footprint Explorer, an open data platform, and calculates Earth Overshoot Day, the date when humanity’s yearly demand on nature exceeds what the planet can renew.

The organization works with governments, companies, cities and researchers, offering metrics, data and analysis to guide decisions in a world facing resource constraints and climate disruption. It collaborates with a network of more than 70 partner organizations worldwide, including conservation groups, financial institutions and research bodies, who help shape its research agenda and footprint methodology. Its data has informed policy in more than a dozen countries.
