Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The Environmental Integrity Project is a nonprofit that pushes for stronger enforcement of environmental laws in the United States.

Its mission is to protect public health and natural resources by holding polluters and government agencies accountable, advocating for tough but fair standards, and helping communities fight for clean air and water. It works through legal enforcement action, data analysis and reporting, and direct support to frontline communities. Its Center for Applied Environmental Science gives local groups access to scientific and engineering expertise for permitting fights, legal challenges and rulemaking.

It focuses on pollution from coal-fired power plants, oil and gas facilities, factory farms, steel manufacturing, landfills and incinerators, with particular attention to the Gulf States, the Ohio River Valley and the Mid-Atlantic region. It runs Ashtracker.org, tracking groundwater contamination at coal ash sites, and Oil & Gas Watch, tracking new fossil fuel and petrochemical infrastructure.

The organization was founded in 2002 by Eric Schaeffer, a former director of the EPA’s Office of Civil Enforcement, after he resigned in protest over political interference in pollution enforcement. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with additional offices in Austin, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana.
