Description

Ecojustice is Canada’s largest environmental law charity, using litigation to defend nature and the environment.

It was founded in 1990 as the Sierra Legal Defence Fund, in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and took its current name in 2007. It now has more than 80 staff and offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax, and operates across Canada.

Its lawyers represent citizens, environmental organizations, First Nations, sustainable businesses and labour groups in court, free of charge, at every level of the justice system. It also pushes for stronger environmental laws by testifying before legislative committees, and engages the public on environmental issues to press governments to act. Its clients and cases have covered issues such as endangered species and habitat loss, the climate crisis, pipeline approvals, industrial pollution and environmental racism.

Ecojustice is a donor-funded charity supported by individual donations rather than government funding.
