Electronic Frontier Foundation

Description

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1990, that defends civil liberties in the digital world. It works through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism and the development of privacy and security tools. They include Privacy Badger, Certbot and Surveillance Self-Defense guides.

Its issue areas include free speech, privacy, creativity and innovation, transparency, security and artificial intelligence. It champions user privacy, free expression and innovation so that technology supports freedom and justice for all people. EFF advises policymakers and educates the press and the public through analysis, guides and workshops. It mobilizes hundreds of thousands of supporters through its Action Center.

It brings and joins legal cases, including suing US government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for public records. It also files amicus briefs, including to the US Supreme Court, on issues such as corporate accountability for facilitating human rights abuses abroad and geofence warrants. It publishes reports on topics such as mobile advertising software and location data sharing, and police surveillance technology.

EFF is based in San Francisco and is donor funded as a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, relying on member support to continue its work defending users worldwide.
